Before you attempt any of these AutoCAD LT tutorials, you should follow the steps in this exercise. They will help you modify the AutoCAD LT user interface to it matches the AutoCAD user interface.

There are several very good reasons to do this.

  • You won't be able to follow our tutorials unless you modify AutoCAD LT's user interface to match AutoCAD's.
  • Changing the AutoCAD LT user interface to match the AutoCAD user interface takes just a few minutes.
  • Our AutoCAD LT tutorials are derived from our AutoCAD tutorials because AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD share 95% of the same commands. Most people who master AutoCAD LT can use AutoCAD without difficulty. Our objective in teaching you to use AutoCAD LT is to teach you AutoCAD as well. Making the AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT user interfaces the same helps us accomplish this objective.
  • Most people who use AutoCAD LT end up working with AutoCAD drawings that come from other people. Those drawings typically have colors which are set up to work with AutoCAD's user interface (light colors in model space, dark colors in paper space). These drawings are very hard to work with in AutoCAD LT's if you don't modify its user interface to match AutoCAD's user interface.
  • Drawings you create are likely to end up in the hands of AutoCAD users. They will find your drawings much easier to work with if you have drawing colors that work well with the standard AutoCAD user interface.
Follow these instructions to launch AutoCAD LT and modify its user interface.
  1. Select the Windows Start menu, choose All Programs, then choose Autodesk, then AutoCAD LT 2006, then choose AutoCAD LT 2006. You can click the AutoCAD LT 2006 icon on your Windows Desktop if you prefer. Both options work equally well for launching AutoCAD LT.

  2. Click on the X to close the Info Palette window. You can bring it up again at any time. From the Tools menu, just choose Info Palette.

  3. From the Tools menu, choose Options. Its at the bottom of the tools menu list.

  4. Select the Display tab.

  5. Choose Colors.
  6. Window Element is already set to Model Tab Background.
  7. Select Black from the color list. In AutoCAD, you draw your design geometry in Model Space. In AutoCAD the Model Space background is black. You are making the Model Space Background in AutoCAD LT black as well.

  8. Select the Layout tabs box. This will change the Window Element to Layout tabs background (paper).

  9. From the color list, choose White. You've just set the Layout background to white. In AutoCAD, you draw your drawing sheet borders and title blocks on Layouts and that area has a white background. You've just made AutoCAD LT's layout area have a white background.

  10. Choose Apply and Close to save your changes.
  11. Choose OK to exit the Options window. AutoCAD LT is now configured to work like AutoCAD.

You can now proceed with the rest of our AutoCAD LT tutorials.
